NORTHERN VIRGINIA—Crisscross Counterpoint is an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Mike Shaffer, who is a sculptor, painter, conceptual artist and writer. His creative career spans more than four decades. There will be an artist’s reception and a talk, open and free to the public, on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at Crossroads Gallery, Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads, 3440 S. Jefferson St, Falls Church, VA 22041..
Lines and linear elements, especially horizontal and vertical ones are everywhere in Mike Shaffer’s paintings and sculptures. These lines and grids are in nature, particularly at microscopic, molecular levels and in products of industrialization. Mike Shaffer is drawn to them where ever they are — edges, corners, borders and boundaries. He is attracted to order, repetition and pattern. He sees his images as being random fragments of greater wholeness like patches cut from a large piece of fabric. He wants his paintings to look like something you have never seen before but remind you of something you have.

Mike Shaffer received a B.S. degree in chemistry and mathematics from the University of Maryland where he created his first works of art. He received a M.S. degree in physiology/biochemistry from Southern Illinois University in 1964 and from 2006-2008 completed additional studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Pursuing a dual career, he worked as a scientist in private industry and the government for over thirty years and, at the same time, as an artist before turning his full-time attention to the visual arts in 1995. His scientific and technical writings have appeared in hundreds of newspapers and magazines around the U.S. and he is the author of two volumes of poetry.
Mike Shaffer was a recent recipient of the Tom Rooney Award at the Sculpture Now 2014 exhibition at American University Museum, sponsored by the Washington Sculptors Group.
