Mike Shaffer lives in Ijamsville, Maryland. He received a B.S. degree in chemistry and mathematics from the University of Maryland where he created his first works of art. He received an M.S. degree in physiology/biochemistry from Southern Illinois University in 1964 and from 2006-2008 completed additional studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art. After pursuing a dual career as a scientist and an artist he turned his full-time attention to the visual arts in 1995. His scientific and technical writings have appeared in hundreds of newspapers and magazines around the U.S. and he is the author of two volumes of poetry.

Born and raised near Cumberland, Maryland, Shaffer, since 2000, continues to serve as President and Board Chairman of the Hyattstown Mill Arts Project, a non-profit cultural arts organization in northern Montgomery County, Maryland and was, from 2009 through 2014 also President of the Washington Sculptors Group, a 400 member non-profit organization that supports and promotes an understanding and appreciation of sculpture and the arts.

Shaffer is the recipient of over a dozen awards and honors, two from the Baltimore Museum of Art as well as the Washington Sculptors Group Tom Rooney Award for Excellence in Sculpture, selected by Jack Rasmussen, Curator and Director, American University Museum at the Katzen Center in Washington, DC in 2014. Since the early seventies, he has shown paintings, drawings, works on paper, video and sculpture including large scale outdoor installations in more than150 formal group and solo exhibitions in galleries, businesses, museums and art centers internationally and in the U.S.
